last nov. 16th & 17th, a solar pumping technology seminar was conducted by lorentz at max’s restaurant, scout tuazon, quezon city.

i’m very much interested in the swimming pool application, coz pool filtration is a regular activity & is the second biggest consumer of electricity next to aircons! together w/ chemical free disinfection, one can have a truly green pool that is good for the people using it as well as the environment. chemical free pools (using saltwater chlorinators, ultraviolet filtration, ozone generators, etc.) don’t harm the swimmer’s clothes, their eyes, skin & hair like what chlorine does (u won’t have teary eyes w/ chemical free pools!) cancer survivors would definitely go for chemical free pools….u also save money on chemicals…in d near future, only stubborn ones will still be using chemicals in their swimming ‘fools’…

if ur running on diesel generating sets to filter ur pool…then ur a polluter. u can prevent d diesel emission by going solar! of course one can retrofit their pool pumps w/ solar panels, but you’ll be needing a lot of solar panels to run an a/c pump (w/ all the losses from the inverter). btw, inverters are expensive & seldom last a long time (except….but i’ve seen expensive branded inverters that are already dead but not old enough…could be the users?) if you have a cheap inverter from (hmmm)….buy another one, you’ll definitely need to change it in the near future….retrofitted solar powered pumps are not robust. the solution to the problem is the direct current brushless motor (dcbm) technology, they’re 90% efficient (so less solar panels needed!). german quality stuff are proven long lasting products (lorentz solar pumps are working w/out problems for more than 12 years in africa & other harsh environments – hope my memory serves me well). there are many solar pump systems installed in the phils. that are no longer in service today….many are even donated by developed countries…

lorentz solar pumps can be accessed via android devices (almost everybody got one or two of these). the system can be monitored via bluetooth. a pump manager software can control (remote configuration/programming) & monitor the system via a cloud based management. this can create a worry-free system.

maintenance of dcbm pumps are not complicated especially the helical rotor technology…non-engineers can be easily trained on the ground…

this is the future! (of course other applications like farming & water supply are cool but for starters… swimming ‘fools’ r better!) if ur wasting money on pumping as well as polluting the environment, u better stop d pollution…

Arousing interest in renewable energy and energy efficiency

“If a company would ask you this question, why should I hire you? Is it because you are an engineering board exam topnotcher? What if not? Is it because you are good in math? What if not? Is it because you are a good basketball player? What if not? But if you say, you are member of a team that was able to save 250,000 pesos per month in energy cost of your university, then the company would ask you this…When do you want to start?”

These were some of the striking words of Engr. Eric E.A. Raymundo when he addressed the participants attending the seminar on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency under the principles of Zero Carbon Resorts project held on February 4, 2012 at the Dean Angustias Sicangco Hall, Holy Angel University, Angeles City. There were 116 participants composed of faculty and senior engineering students from the University of Assumption, Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University, and the host Holy Angel University plus a lone participant from the Fontana Development Corporation located at the Clark Economic Zone. The seminar was sponsored by the Graduate School of Engineering under its Advocacy and Extension (ADEX) Program with the intention of promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency in the community.

During the seminar, Engr. Raymundo who is the Local Senior Technician (Philippines) of the GrAT (Center for Appropriate Technology) of Vienna University of Technology specifically discussed the ever increasing demand for energy consumption in the tourism industry and its participation for the large amount of CO2 emissions. Engr. Raymundo presented their project’s 3R solution, which is to reduce energy consumption, replace inefficient technologies and redesign buildings and systems. This three step method will help the industry not just to save money in the long run for its minimal energy costs, but also become a more environment friendly company.

It is important that we would be able to do our normal tasks given that we can also lessen our carbon emission. We just have to know how. The ZCR project helps us understand how we can start and its relevance in our daily lives. This strategic method will not only help the environment but will also entail the long-term savings in our homes, schools, etc. The principle is that renewable energy does not make sense without energy efficiency. It so happened that the Philippines provides a lot of room for the use of renewable energy. “It is more cost effective to save energy than to generate it from conventional or renewable sources”, says Raymundo.
Finally, he suggested that if students will get involved in the implementation of an energy management system (in accordance with ISO 50001) in this university, they can learn how to save money as well as help improve the overall environmental performance of Holy Angel University. Students will learn the knowledge and skills which they can utilize to help companies become more energy efficient in the future. Problem-solvers will be in demand in the near future especially when the price of fuel rises to a hundred pesos per liter!”

After the seminar, the participant from the Fontana Development Corporation felt the need to invite Engr. Raymundo to spread the message on renewable energy and energy efficiency to his colleagues.

The students of HAU also gave the positive reaction and were enticed to an idea that will open new doors for their future career.

it feels good wen d institution ur volunteering ur talent is following ur advice….tis s wat i felt wen d maintenance guy (mr ogie) of st martin de porres charity hospital installed solar bulbs (using a softdrink pet bottle – a.k.a isang litrong liwanag). in the powerhouse of the hospital’s sewerage treatment plant & at the maintenance staff house. they used to leave d lights open on tis areas even in mid day since d areas are dimly lit….now dey don’t need 2waste electricity wenever d sun s shining!

d pple who have seen d solar bulbs r happy bout it. accordingly, dey didn’t had any problem bout leakage even after some heavy rains…some volunteer staff of d hospital r planning 2install d solar bulbs in their houses..mr ogie is now teaching d interested ones how 2make solar bulbs by demselves. .can’t wait 2see tis thing multiply!

re-using empty soda bottles s a cool green idea! using electricity to produce hot water s d most inefficient way of heating water….it contributes to high peak demand when everybody take a shower in the morning or early evening! thus, more energy is needed to be produced by power plants w/c usually r fueled by coal, diesel or bunker oil! using d sun 2heat water s d best thing dat we can do help stop d pollution!
