“If we burn the plastic, we generate toxins and a large amount of CO2. If we convert it into oil, we save CO2 and at the same time increase people’s awareness about the value of plastic garbage,” says Akinori Ito, CEO of Blest.

Blest’s conversion technology is very safe because it uses a temperature controlling electric heater rather than flame. The machines are able to process polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene (numbers 2-4) but not PET bottles (number 1). The result is a crude gas that can fuel things like generators or stoves and, when refined, can even be pumped into a car, a boat or motorbike. One kilogram of plastic produces almost one liter of oil. To convert that amount takes about 1 kilowatt of electricity.

supermarket: reusable bag

d last time we went 2d puregold supermarket in zabarte, caloocan city 2buy groceries. we brought-in several reusable shopping bags (greenbags fr sm-shoemart). d guard did not let our bags enter d supermarket so we deposited d greenbags 2d baggage check-in counter. apparently dey have a policy not 2allow empty bags inside d supermarket.

wen wer about 2pay d cashier, d cashier informed us dat we won’t get any points by using d green bags (probably coz since itz fr sm & not fr puregold or dey don’t have reusable bags point system in-place). i told her dat itz ok since wer not aftr d points but 2help save some plastic bags….she was not happy w/ dat so i stressed 2her dat point system w/ reusable bags (if ever dey have one) is not suppose 2b a gimmick but a chance 4customers help lessen d amt of plastic bags polluting d environment….

most likely, (if it is really d case) d puregold mgt came up w/ an enviro prog since deir competitors r doin it…but somewer along d way, dey 4got 2stress d real message 2deir employees…..

how can pple bring native bayongs in supermarkets den? pple should b encourage 2use reusable bags no matter wat….tis should b d goal & getting points or freebies in doing so should just b an incentive & not d end purpose…

we love 2shop at puregold coz dey’r near our place & robinsons as well as sm supermarkets r quite expensive…hope dat d environmental consciousness of d puregold mgt & itz workers will improve in d very near future…

biodegradable plastics

a colleague of mine, ms. carol lee wrote me tis note:
Hello Eric,
Just late last year, I noticed that the yellow shopping bags of SM (Shoe Mart) have ‘biodegradable‘ printed on them.  Until then, I have always thought their bags are made of plastic.  How can one tell whether a bag is actually manufactured using biodegradable plastic or not?
Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you on the above.
All the best,

der was a time wen plastic bags (lotz wer from sm supermarkets) on unsanitary landfills, sewer canals, rivers & even in manila bay r regularly seen on photos in newspapers & magazines….
plastic bag pollution

plastic bag pollution

shoemart noiselessly introduced deir oxo-biodegradable plastic (obps) bags as well as d re-usable green bags (can last up2 2yrs or 100 grocery trips, accordingly) 2address d problem.
d question is….do we really need a plastic bag dat will last a hundred years? biodegradable plastic bags (sm obps bags decompose after 6 months) r cool coz of low enviro impact…

biodegradable plastic bags can b identified fr deir labels. see pix bellow. f plastic bags r not labeled so, den dey’r not!

giordano (a clothes shop) have bio-bags 4deir customers….

in d past (wen brandenberger invented it in 1908), cellophane wer made fr plants b4 petrochemical based plastics became d cheapest alternative.

pple say dat biodegradable plastics r more expensive dan regular plastics…according 2a friend (who’s familiar w/ d supplier of sm), sm didn’t spent too much more in deir biodegradable bags due 2d volume scale (only 12% more expensive according an sm insider)…..guess, cost s always a reason 4pple 2justify dat we can pollute d earth….

using re-usable bags (cloth bags, ‘bayong’, etc.) s d best way 2go……in europe, one has 2pay 4plastic bags if u don’t hav ur own re-usable bags…tis actually lessens d amt of plastic bag waste….

we need 2stop pollution fr plastics……

a friend from d phil. pollution prevention roundtable (p3r) 4warded a plastic bottles ppt. 2view it, click on d link bellow:
