mercury minimization program

last july 14, 2009, we conducted a mercury minimization program workshop w/ d hospital waste mgt. committee (hwmc) of d lucena united doctors hospital & medical center (ludhmc).

P9116339P9116314

mercury is the only metal element dat is in liquid form at room temperature. it is highly toxic, especially when metabolized into methyl mercury. accordingly,  it may cause harmful effects 2d nervous, digestive, respiratory, immune systems & 2d kidneys, besides causing lung damage. adverse health effects from mercury exposure can be: tremors, impaired vision and hearing, paralysis, insomnia, emotional instability, developmental deficits during fetal development, and attention deficit and developmental delays during childhood.

In 1991, the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that a safe level of mercury exposure, below which no adverse effects, has never been established.

in view of tis, ludhmc is now pursuing a mercury minimization program as part of d hospital’s social development program. some f d strategies include d ff:

  • mercury fever thermometers are no longer issued 2patients’ kits. likewise, d pharmacy s no longer selling tis thermometers. 2eliminate oder sources, patients will b prohibited 2bring-in tis kind of fever thermometers.

P9116337

  • identification of mercury containing equipment/devices & sources per department by members of d hwmc. listing of sources & uses of mercury as well as their amt/volume.
  • labeling (‘containing mercury’ ) d devices 2alert its users regarding d danger of spillage/breakage. & a goal 2phase-out their purchase in favor of safer, equally effective alternatives. tis includes d assessment of alternatives & their costs.
  • pollution prevention tru proper hazardous mercury waste segregation, storage & disposal, e.g. not 2b included in infectious waste stream…

P9116326

  • drafting of a purchasing policy that requires vendors to sign a mercury-content disclosure agreement.
  • 2conduct a mercury awareness campaign as well as emplyoyee education & training on preventing and proper handing of mercury spills.
  • mercury spills clean-up tool kit will b made available in every nurse stations.
  • collection & proper handling of busted fluorescent lamps. mercury containing lamps r stored properly & accounted for in accordance w/ R.A. 6969 (hazwas mgt act) prior 2disposal by an accredited treater. a target of 10% annual replacement of energy efficient & mercury free led lights (light emitting diodes) n d hospital s up4 consideration.
  • promotion of dental amalgam fillings alternatives as well as actions like, amalgam storage and handling & amalgam capsule handling. bellow is a preview of a one hour fully referenced documentary about d danger of mercury fr dental amalgam (www.lammag.com and http://www.bcd.com.au):

hope dat tis measures will b d start of a successful program…..

low carbon concrete application

we have just finished applying d low carbon concrete at d bldg. 2 of jbc food corp. last night. d first concrete repair was conducted at d first half of bldg. 2 last june 12-14 & d 2nd half was implemented tis weekend fr july 10-12. d conduct of d environment-friendly low carbon concrete repair  w/ maleki products was done in just 3 full-days per application. if regular cement wer used, it would take bout 3weeks of downtime (tis s very advantageous 2companies who don’t want 2stop production 4a long time due 2flooring repair activity.

d new flooring is now hydrophobic & waterproof but water vapor permeable, chemical & mechanical load resistant, salt resistant, abrasion resistant, volatile organic compounds free, high temperature resistant, very easy 2clean (no need 4xpensive detergents & degreasers), etc.

P6127716

P6127719

P6137751

since d low carbon concrete is inorganic, bacteria can’t thrive on it unlike other organic flooring systems…..d coving of d corners w/ maleki patching mortar made d  corners of floor & walls dirt free (easy 2clean), likewise it is mouse & cockroach free (coz no more crevices)….d patching mortar (as well as other maleki products) is moisture expansion & shrinkage free unlike regular cement & no insect or pest can break/penetrate it coz itz abrasion & high mechanical load resistant…..

guess….tis will b one of d future 4green concrete……

Fumes from indoor cooking fires kill more than 2 million children a year in the developing world. MIT engineer Amy Smith details an exciting but simple solution: a tool for turning farm waste into clean-burning charcoal.

in 2008, together w/ my japanese friend mr junji takano, we developed an improved cooking stove 2help mitigate d black carbon emitted fr kitchen households utilizing charcoal or fuelwood. click on d link below 2see d pdf file

titanium dioxide airconditioner

kolin philippines recently incorporated the titanium dioxide photocatalytic technology in their airconditioners that accordingly  has effectively helped in the elimination of airborne bacteria, mold, fungi, household odors and viruses. The TiO2 photocatalytic action attacks and destroys contaminants that are constantly circulating through the air by disintegrating their DNA, turning harmful air into harmless CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H2O (water).

with the help of nano technology, it allows their air-conditioners to give ppl not just cooling comfort, but also pure, clean and healthier air. this is a good locally available green technology for improving indoor air quality.

indoor air quality

going back 2d basics…plants absorb co2 n produces o2 thru photosynthesis….here’s a talk bout d topic of producing fresh air 2improve indoor air quality….

2address indoor air pollution if ever u have only few plants inside ur bldgs…..we can use light bulbs coated w/ titanium dioxide. tis kind of light bulbs destroys harmfull gases, eliminate odor causing chemicals, kills airborne mold spores, create a germ-free work area, etc…..btw, it also a light bulb dat will light ur house….

d bulbs are self-cleaning & cleans d air thru photocatalysis……cool technology…..though quite expensive…but w/ itz capabilities aside fr producing light…..itz worth it….can’t wait 2get my hands on my upcoming samples…..

boiler efficiency & accidents

i’ve been doin research on boiler efficiency since this is one of d major areas where industrial companies can save a lot of money while minimizing their organization’s global warming potential. bad emissions is a sign of money being burnt….w/ dcost of fossil fuel continuously being volatile, making a boiler work efficiently should be d standard….fuel efficiency is not only bout money savings but also bout safety….an inefficient boiler means trouble….big trouble…it’s like dealing w/ a pressure cooker in d kitchen, it’s very dangerous when u don’t deal w/it properly.

at d start of this holly week, a heat exchanger tank of a boiler system exploded in a styrofoam factory in bulacan province. according 2d news, der wer almost a dozen pple killed in d accident.

blast59659

many companies are converting their boilers 2utilize biomass just like this styrofoam factory, i.e. dey’r using rice husks as fuel 4d boiler. biomass boiler owners should be particularly carefull bout d fireside since soot accumulation is inevitable….soot in d fireside of a firetube boiler means less heat transfer so more fuel is needed 2burn 2heat d same amount f water. accordingly: ‘soot has five times the insulating value of asbestos. allowing it to accumulate in boiler firetubes wastes fuel-a 3/16″ accumulation in the firetubes will waste more than 20% of the boilers’ fuel.’

in d waterside, water scale, lime & rust accumulate n have a significant impact on heat transfer….more scales means more fuel needed…

therefore, bad boiler maintenance means bad air emissions, inefficient heat transfer, more fuel being burnt…and most of all….it can be an accident waiting 2happen….

when companies loose 10 million pesos (not including d cost of lost lives) like this styrofoam factory….dey will no longer think bout d cost-benefit-analysis of preventive maintenance….an efficient boiler is not only bad for d company’s bottomline in d short-term (due 2expenses 2b incurred) but also good 4d environment as well as d safety & health of d workers in d long-run….

if d styrofoam company can prove dat dey have a working boiler efficiency program  (bep)….i can only agree dat wat happened is really an accident…

if companies can calculate how much savings is d 20% of deir million peso fuel expenses & d cost savings in preventing an accident….it will den be a no-brainer 2implement a bep…..

low carbon concrete repair

we have successfully tested an environment friendly low carbon concrete product from maleki gmbh. this summer we will implement a concrete repair of the flooring in building 2 of jbc food corporation. the voc-free products of maleki is a solution to the food manufacturing industry. d hydrophobic low cabon concrete is in-line w/ my client’s current good manufacturing practices & a vital solution to address bacterial growth on d factory flooring & will form a part of haccp (hazard analysis & critical control point) program of jbc foods.

d maleki products are chemical resistant & yet dey are chemical free….factories use lotz of cleaning agents to make sure their workplace is clean…d consequence is dat….dey have 2live w/ dilapidated floorings after a few years….

using a green product never seemed tis good! maleki is partly owned by my mentor (on phased implementation of enviro mgt systems) & friend matthias gelber. matt is d greenest person in d planet contest winner last 2008.

fire safety training

just this sunday morning, we conducted a fire fighting drill w/ about a hundred new regular workers of jbc food corporation a peanut manufacturing company. the activity is in-line w/ the fire prevention month (an annual activity in the philippines celebrated during the month of march). the fire chief of caloocan city fire station (sfo4 alexander marguez) and his internal affairs service chief (sfo4 arnel ibasco) delivered a lecture on fire safety and fire fighting techniques.

annual conduct of this activity is carried out since:

  • there is a need to refill the old stock fire extinguishers.
  • there is a need to train newly regularized employees and would be fire volunteers on fire fighting techniques.
  • fire safety permit is needed to be renewed annually
  • the company needs to be safe to always be in business…

health, safety & environment should always be implemented together by companies to be firmly competitive…
